The Great Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete is one of the great works in Eastern Orthodox literature. Written in the seventh century a.d., The Great Canon still maintains relevance for the modern age. It is the backbone of Orthodox services for the first and fifth weeks of Great Lent and sets the tone for a Christian’s self reflection and repentance appropriate to the season. The erudite Saint Andrew presents 250 verses using examples from both the old and new testaments that remind each Christian of their need to seek repentance and redemption by conforming to the teachings of scripture. Traditionally, the service of the Great Canon as celebrated in the fifth week of lent is presented together with the reading of the life of Saint Mary of Egypt, set down by Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem around the year 640 a.d. The present edition begins with a short synopsis of the life of Saint Andrew. It proceeds with a new edition of the Great Canon itself with attention to a smooth flowing English suitable for reading aloud. Finally, the life of Saint Mary is rendered, again with attention to a flowing style for reading aloud. This book may be used by the solitary reader at home, but also contains rubrics for use as a service book in church.
