Experience a deeper prayer life through this fresh take on ancient liturgy for believers today.
Designed to help individuals, families, and congregations pray together across denominations, this book of common prayer will help you and your community join together each day with the same songs, scriptures, and prayers. Composed under an advisory team of liturgy experts, these three influential and inspiring authors have created Common Prayer–a tapestry of prayer that will help the church be one as God is one.
This universal prayer book allows readers to greet each day together, remembering significant dates and Christian heroes in church history, as well as important historic dates in the struggle for freedom and justice. There are morning prayers for each day of the year, evening prayers for each of the seven days of the week, a midday prayer to be repeated throughout the year, and prayers for special occasions. In addition, there are morning prayers for Holy Week.
Common Prayer also includes a unique songbook composed of music and classic lyrics to more than fifty songs from various traditions, including African spirituals, traditional hymns, Mennonite gathering songs, and Taize chants. Tools for prayer are scattered throughout to aid those who are unfamiliar with liturgy and to deepen the prayer life of those who are familiar with liturgical prayer.
Ultimately, Common Prayer makes liturgy dance, taking the best of the old and bringing new life to it with a fresh fingerprint for the contemporary renewal of the church.
From the Publisher

If you love liturgy, this book is for you.
If you don’t know what liturgy is, this book is also for you.
Whether you are over-churched or under-churched, a proud evangelical, a recovering evangelical, or not an evangelical at all; whether you are high church, low church, or no church, a skeptic or a Pentecostal; whether you have found a community or have burned out on community; this book is for you.
This is a different kind of book. It’s not a book you pick up and read straight through. In fact, this book is not designed to be read alone. It is a book filled with songs, prayers, ideas, and memories that are meant to be spoken aloud and shared together in some form of community. That community may be your biological family or a small group of friends. It could be a gathering of folks in your public housing unit or dorm room, in your village or cul-desac. The early church met in homes and as congregations in local assemblies. Whatever form your community takes, this is a book about “we,” not “me.”
— Shane Claiborne, et al.

Morning Prayer
There are morning prayers for each morning of the year, and eight special morning prayers to be used during Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter. Morning prayers are designed to help us wake up and greet the day.

Midday Prayer
Midday prayer is meant to be a way of carving out space in the busyness of our days to center us on Christ. It is a simple office of prayer put together from various ancient sources and monastic traditions, and can be prayed in about ten minutes.

Evening Prayer
There are seven evening prayers, one for each evening of the week, to be repeated each week throughout the year. We created these evening prayers in the hope that, just as the morning prayers allow us to greet the morning together, the evening prayers will allow us to retire from the day together.

Occasional Prayers and Songbook
There are prayers for house blessings, for healing, for births and for deaths, for sending people out on adventures, and for gathering folks for meals.
We asked folks from many different traditions to give us their list of “greatest hits,” the songs they sing in the shower and have written on their hearts. We’ve collected those classics and compiled them into a songbook with words, melodies, and chords — everything from African- American spirituals and freedom songs to Taize chants and old hymns.

Other books by Shane Claiborne
Drawing on Scripture, church history, and his own story, Shane Claiborne explores how a passion for social justice issues surrounding life and death intersects with our faith as we advocate for life in its totality. A radical manifesto to awaken the Christian political imagination, reminding us that our ultimate hope lies not in partisan political options but in Jesus and the incarnation of the peculiar politic of the church as a “set apart” people. In this groundbreaking book, Shane Claiborne describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting us into a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a broken world. For all the Christians facing conflict between Jesus’ words and their own lives, for those who feel they rarely see Jesus’ commands reflected in the lives of his followers, here is a new kind of Christianity centered on the words of Jesus.
