The Virgin Mary & Child Christ – The Apse Mosaic, Hagia Sophia
The Hagia Sophia is located in Istanbul, Turkey, and is one of the greatest historical Byzantine monuments in the world. It was originally commissioned by the Roman emperor Justinian I in the 6th century A.D. as the main Christian cathedral of Constantinople and was officially called the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time of its construction, it was the largest man-made interior space in the world and retained the title of the world’s largest cathedral for almost a thousand years. Hagia Sophia is also a significant architectural monument. Among other notable features, it was one of the first buildings ever to employ an infrastructural device called a pendentive, allowing the placement of a circular dome over a square room — a true feat of engineering using 6th century technology!
This framed stone mosaic is a replica of The Apse mosaic in the Hagia Sophia. While it isn’t known for certain when it was originally installed, this mosaic was rediscovered in the mid 1800s after being covered for a time during the Ottoman era in which much of the Christian imagery was concealed or removed. It now stands as “one of the foremost monuments of Byzantium” as stated by the Head of the Institute of Art History and Theory of a university in Florenz.
This replica is printed on a solid slab of stone masonry and placed in a sturdy, high quality frame to be hung on the wall as both an important piece of cultural and artistic history and a significant piece of early Christianity. These beautiful framed stone icons make great tasteful displays of faith at home in the kitchen, living room, entryway, or bedroom, as well as at work or church in the office, breakroom, or main sanctuary. They also make great Christian and Catholic gifts for those who have a deep appreciation for history and the arts.
