A Christian life cannot be conceived without asceticism. That is, without the effort that the believer undertakes, guided and strengthened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, to free themselves from the yoke of sin and the dominion of passions and to follow the Lord’s will with self-denial—to live in Christ and to become a living member of His body, which is the Church.

Fasting holds a crucial place in this ascetic endeavour; it is one of the most effective weapons in our spiritual struggle. The word of God attests to this, and the lives of the Saints reveal this. This is what our Church believes and teaches, considering fasting one of its sacred and ancient institutions.

However, like other institutions of the Church, fasting, especially today, is at risk of losing its meaning or becoming irrelevant! Unfortunately, this happens among many Christians, who are supposed to zealously uphold and accurately embody the ecclesiastical institutions.

Therefore, some Christians—sometimes out of ignorance and sometimes out of prejudice—underestimate the value of fasting and do not observe it. Others, who may observe it to some extent, do so conventionally. They do not always have the necessary awareness of its deeper significance, nor do they know all those elements that concern it and that a conscious believer should know.

Thus, the observance of fasting becomes a mere formal act that does not correspond to the deeper content that faith and the experience of the Church have imparted to the institution of fasting.

This small book aims to help our Orthodox brothers better understand the true meaning of fasting, realise its fundamental importance for our spiritual life, and know when and how they ought to fast.
