Our humanity is broken and sickly. A quick glance around us or inside us confirms this sad reality. Corporations, politicians, and well-meaning friends offer solutions that frequently leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. We feel this way because we live in a subnatural state.

Through the time-tested beliefs and practices of the Orthodox Church, our humanity can be healed. We can rise from a subnatural state to a supernatural mode of being in which we “partake of the divine nature” (1 Pet. 1:4) so “that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 Jn. 3:2).

This process is not the abolition of our humanity but rather the fulfillment of it. We do not seek the destruction of all passion but the redirecting of our energies toward divinity.

Changes made & other notes by the author

A few small changes were made to the front cover. Additional catechetical chapters were added addressing iconography, prayers to the saints, and confession. More material means a longer book and higher printing costs. So, a slight increase in price was necessary. I think these changes are worthwhile because the book now addresses some of the most common catechetical questions I receive.

In the Kindle edition, illustrations were added to Section headings and chapter headings in Section 4. Some formatting, grammatical, and spelling errors were addressed in both editions. Thank you to all those who helped point these out! Please continue to do so!Becoming Human was prepared for teaching catechesis in my local church. It is organized as follows:Sections 1-3 of the book focus on who we are as humans, how we got where we are, what the Orthodox Church offers us for our healing in Christ, and how we implement that into our daily lives. These sections contain a great amount of our Church’s theology, but its presentation focuses on showing us that Orthodoxy is a way of life.

Section 4, which is almost the same length as Sections 1-3 combined, contains numerous essays addressing common theological questions such as: why do we pray to the saints? why do we have icons? how do I prepare for confession? what do we mean when we talk about “God”? See the Table of Contents for more details.
